McLaren 620R Takes GT4 Performance to the Street

The success of the 570S GT4 in championships around the world has generated client interest in a variant that captures the spirit of a sports racer that can be driven on the road. McLaren has developed the 620R to fill that capacity, with just 350 units to be delivered as the most extreme example of the McLaren Sports Series.
 
The 620R has more than just a passing resemblance to the GT4 contestant, as it uses the same chassis and borrows aerodynamic and suspension modifications from the track-only sports car. The adjustable rear wing can provide up to 408 pounds of downforce, with the front aero combining to create another 143 pounds—all of which will invariably create a track experience within reach of purpose-built machinery.

Powering the 620R is a familiar 3.8-liter V8, twin-turbocharged to produce a range-topping 620PS and 620Nm of torque, liberated from the regulations of motorsports. The recalibrated power plant from the GT4 launches the 620R to 60 mph in under three seconds, and an aerodynamically-limited 200 mph, but it’s clear the focus is on track speed, not top speed. The result is authentic; it looks, feels and handles like a race car.
 
Transmitting that speed to the road is a modified 7-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox that is both expeditious and emotional. In Track Mode, McLaren’s “Inertia Push” technology converts built-up flywheel energy into a surge of torque on upshift, delivering savage performance in the setting where it is most needed. But for an exhilarating experience on the road, Sport Mode dramatizes each gear change with a cut of the ignition spark for a “crack” of the exhaust on upshift. On road or track, the 620R is engineered to excite unlike any other.
 
Speed, though, is meaningless without the proper equipment to control it. Putting that power to the asphalt is standard Pirelli Trofeo R tires wrapped around staggered wheels, but full-on slicks are available for track use. Hidden behind those wheels is a track-ready carbon ceramic braking system with improved pedal response and resistance to fade, without sacrificing everyday usability on the road.

But the 620R is, quite obviously, not marketed for the everyday journey. As standard, the 620R is stripped out to exclude floor carpeting or a glove box, as well as air conditioning, navigation and audio system being available to add at no cost. Elsewhere inside, the 620R continues its motorsports inspiration with carbon fiber racing seats and harnesses installed as standard, with other carbon fiber elements including the steering wheel spokes, center console and extended shift paddles. Once your harnesses are secured and you pull the door-mounted strap toward you, the line between road car and race car has all but been erased.
 
The 620R, like every other McLaren road car, can be dynamically specified to meet the taste of each of the 350 buyers. Options include everything from the famous MSO roof scoop to a titanium exhaust system, and of course the entire MSO color palette is available unless the owner prefers a unique racing livery. 
 
These hand-built racers will begin production in January 2020, and include a Pure McLaren driving experience in Europe or the US.
