ESPN's Gary Striewski returns for the final recap from Pikes Peak 2021 as Race Day is finally here and didn't fail to deliver some legendary Pikes Peak drama!
After a week of early morning practices, and late nights in the garage, Race Day finally arrived. The mountain is known for its unreliable weather conditions and manages to throw a new set of challenges to the teams each year. This year was no different. Throughout the week the weather forecast for race day changed from sunny and 70 degrees, to 3-6 inches of snow and 25 degrees. Unfortunately, the latter came to fruition, and on the morning of race day the top of the mountain was covered in snow and ice. Because of this the race officials made the difficult decision to only race 3/4 of the mountain ending at Devil's Playground.
The team was able to fight through it all conquering Pikes Peak en route to three podium finishes for our three drivers. David Donohue came back with a vengeance claiming 3rd in Time Attack 1 Class while posting the 2nd fastest overall time in the 3rd section. His final time of 6:45.893 was good enough to place him 8th overall in the field. His teammates took it a step further with both Raphael Astier and Tanner Foust claiming 1st place finishes in their respective classes! Raphael won the Pikes Peak Open Class in his 2015 Porsche BBi Turbo Cup with a time of 6:36.867, which was also good for 5th overall. Tanner Foust came out on top in the Porsche Trophy by Yokohama Class finishing with a time of 7:28.269 in his 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, placing him 19th overall.
The drivers may be done for 2021 , but that doesn't mean the coverage has to stop as well. Stay tuned to our YouTube and social pages as we continue to release exclusive content from Pikes Peak. Congrats to our drivers and their incredible team for an incredibly successful run up Pikes Peak. Here's to 2022!
