Historic Porsches Cross the Block at Pebble Beach Auctions

Porsche’s historic lineage includes creating the world’s most soulful road cars as well as highly competitive racing machines. With these combined pedigrees, Porsches are always near the top of the list of some of the most significant cars in motoring history.

As a result, whenever some of these high-profile Porsche sports cars change hands, it’s often a highly publicized transaction and involves a remarkable amount of money. It’s very rare to stumble upon the opportunity to own part of Porsche’s rich history.

But for one week every year, automotive dreams come true. During the world-famous Monterey Car Week, surrounding the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, automotive auction houses have available some of the rarest pieces of racing history as well as the most desirable street-legal cars on earth. Offerings from RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Company and Bonhams frequently reach the million-dollar plateau and well beyond, and this year, several Porsches reached that milestone at auction.

Included among the seven-figure cars were three Porsche 959s among the road-going offerings. All three claimed above $1 million, with a paint-to-sample black one bringing in more than $1.7 million at Gooding’s auction to lead the way. But prices skyrocketed even higher from there as historic race cars began crossing the block, commanding huge premiums just for their legacies.

Gooding, which was responsible for several of the million-dollar-plus Porsches, hit a home run with its sale of a 1982 Porsche

RS60956 for $10,120,000 — more than $1 million above the high end of the original estimate. The car was a five-time winner in competition, including the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans, ensuring that this car has deep history and justifying the excessive price.

Following behind in the same auction was a 1960 Porsche RS60, and while it sold for below the original estimate, it still crossed the block with a sale price of $5.4 million.

Porsche’s continual striving to create the most inspiring road and race cars has led to a fantastically storied history for the brand. With these achievements in place, the brand’s cars become more desirable every year.

It’s only a matter of time until cars in today’s showrooms become the next classics.
